Installation hangs at 'Setting up network interfaces....

I am trying to recover the files from a corrupted Windows XP macine. Please could someone advise, I am trying to run Puppy from CD (I have burned the ISO correctly with recommended software).

The installation starts to work fine, going through the checks upto and including the keyboard screen at which point I select UK and click OK.

It then goes onto setting up network interfaces... and this becomes 'backgrounded'! At which point I leave it running but nothing happens?

What can I do to solve this and get the GUI up and running?

Thank you in anticipation...

you are gonna need to post more detailed hardware info. also try using a different distro like ubuntu or mandriva or slackware or even just give knoppix a go (a live cd, no install)

if all you are trying to do is recover files then I'd use knoppix or some other live cd.

I agree download knoppix, also ensure that the installation media is good (the CD, no scratches etc).

Thank you

Knoppix seems to be an excellent piece of software and loaded and seemed to start working fine. Unfortunately due to my ignorance i didn't realise Linux doesn't support NTSF formatted drives so it didn't work.

Thanks anyway. I will need to try and repair Windows!!!

Try using System Rescue, last time I remember, a number of distros supported NTFS filesystem. I'm not sure why Knoppix doesn't, unless you're using an old version.
