Installation Freeze!
 

Hi I have recently received my Free KUBUNTU CD... and trying to install it on MY IBM THINKPAD Desktop PC

Motherboard: Intel 845GV
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ
Memory: 256 MB
HD: 80GB

I thinks this desktop PC have the minimun requirements to set up here a small LAMP server!

I start the live CD and click on Install but when it gets to step 3 (Keyboard Configuration) it shows up a small proggress bar and it gets to 100% but when it dissappear, the PC completely FREEZES!

I do this a lot of times, even try to install on OEM option but it wont work...I think it freezes because of my short memory amount (just guessing)

My question is:

Is there anyway to install It from boot options, I mean with a GUI, not console...(because im not a very good linux user, im intended to... =) ), or is there anyway to not load the LIVE CD on memory instead of a clear Installation??

I have had problems with Ubuntu and its relatives.

The memory and spec of your computer are fine, I have had Ubuntu on a Pentium3 500mHz with 128ram and 16gB disk. Are you trying to install an AMD64? To cut a very long story short, my present PC should take AMD64 installation disk, but there were problems so I went back to I386 with excellent results.

I can't answer your detailed questions but I have found Debian 4.0 works on anything. It is just as good as its offspring Ubuntu (in my opinion better, I have written a review). Try downloading the Debian 4.0 I386 ISO, burn it using Infrarecorder, go from there. If you want something that looks and behaves exactly like Kubuntu then select the K desktop. Best of luck- Phil

256 MB of RAM is not enough for install and run Kubuntu. You should use Xubuntu or Slackware, Debian, FreeBSD (these OSes just need poor system )

You base these statements on what?

I am assuming that English is not your native tongue. The before mentioned will surpass Kubuntu in the right hands. Kubuntu is nothing more than ubuntu w/KDE.

Hey THANKS for tryig to help me....I recently change the Installation CD using other KUBUNTU 7.10, and UBUNTU 7.04....but nothinit still freezes but not in the same place.

I have more information:

When I load the LIVE CD, and KUBUNTU starts I look for memory on system menu and there say "physical is on 99%" thats why Im askin for an Installation way without loading the Live CD on memory, I think maybe just installing it from LIVE CD Boot Menu or with a console if someone could gie me precise instructions I wolud give ti a try!

Just a suggestion with what I had success with:

When booting the CD, select F6 (Options) - this will allow you to add to the command line - add the following:

noapic irqpoll pci=routeirq

then press ENTER

one of the things that won't show up is a message about some timer not present.

If you add the above to the boot line, when the system finally updates during install you won't have to add it again when GRUB gets updated.

Randy3011....Thx for your help but it wont WORK... :( My PC its still freezing in the same place....when the keyboard distribution screen shows up I choose Latinamerican, then a small window appear and shows a loading bar and a "skip" button....when the small windows dissappear the computer frezzes and theres no HD sound, or CD_ROM reading sound or anythibg else...I have try 2 Kubuntu (original :P) CD's nad nothing happens!

BTW what does that line that I add into the boot commando does??

Kubuntu 7.10 uses the Linux 2.6.22 kernel which treats all disk drives as if they were SCSI or SATA. I haven't installed it myself, but that may be why you are getting that message.

BTW, according to the Kubuntu release notes, if you have less than 320MB of RAM, you should use the Alternate CD to install, not the regular Install CD:
