Installation fatal errors while migrating to Red Hat Fedora 4
 

After being held down by the man (gates) for years, I am trying to attempt a migration from Windoz to Fedora 4. I am very new to Linux but definitely want to try it out. I am attempting to install on a secondary Hard drive to dual boot with Window XP home until I get more familiar with using the system. The first time I attempted to install, I basically tried to install all packages but received a fatal error when installing on the gimp packages. Next I did the basic installation for Workstation (default packages).

I can get all the way till packages are starting to install but then get fatal error. This last time received fatal error ksh-20050202-1........ When I reboot back to Windows, the second drive does not display because it is now formatted for Linux (verified with Partition Magic V8).

Description of my system:

2 Hard drives:
1: 40GB with Windows XP Home - NTFS
2: 120GB (where I want to install Fedora) Unpartitioned

Motherboard:
ECS 741GX-M SiS Socket A MicroATX Motherboard / Audio / 4x/8x AGP / 10/100 Ethernet LAN / USB 2.0 / CNR

CPU:
AMD Sempron 462-pin Socket A 1.66 Ghz x86 Family

Memory:
756 MB DDR333 (PC-2700)

Video:
Integrated 8x AGP Graphics
SiS 741 GX

I have done quite of bit of research but since I am so new to this operating system I am starting to get frustrated. I am following all steps included in Red Hat Fedora 4 Unleashed as well as SAMS Teach Yourself Red Hat Fedora 4 Linux All in One. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could have a problem with your installation media. Try getting new discs from centos.org. CentOS is a rebuild or RHEL and is free for download.

a silly question, but I am assuming that I should be downloading the x86_64 or should I download i386?

If you are not using a 64 bit processor, then download the i386 (x86) isos.

Still having problems. Tried twice with CentOS. First time fatal error when installing OpenOffice package. Second time, removed this option from being installed and then it crashed even earlier in the process while installing Perl.

Any other ideas?

Well, I think this could be a hardware problem or a problem with your cd media.

Thanks for your help. I was able to finally get CentOS installed. Now I just need to figure out how to access my Windows files and set up dual boot.
