it doesnt really matter where, usually for larger programs the resulting binaries sort themselves into logical places /bin /sbin, the main thing is to know where you have placed things and to develop a system that works for you, a large part of this is learning to manipulate your $PATH do a search on this forum for more information but basically its where bash looks for executables it what allows you to execute "gaim" instead of needing "/usr/bin/gaim" long answer to short questions hope you understand it now
