Hello,

i have just recently installed Fedora Linux on my PC (P4 512 MB ram). everything just works fine. but i have only one issue. While reboot FC5 connects to internet automatically. i connect to internet using the ADSL modem. i would like to verify the userid and password using which it is connecting. Can someone tell me where to look for this information. To connect to my ISP, i need an authenticated userid and password.

Does the connection work? If so, your id/password are probably saved in your ADSL modem.

How would the user ID and password get stored in the modem? Seems more likely that they got built in to some kind of config file.

For the OP: How did this system get set up? ie did you--or anyone--ever configure the system to connect without a password? if so, how?

I don't remember how Fedora does things, but--in general--you will find relevant configuration files in /etc under headings like network--something. This will help you find the right files:
find /etc -name "network*" (finds all directories and files beginning with "network")

A lot of ADSL modems have either a web-interface or script that stores the id/password in the modem when the user first hooks it to his pc.

From his story, I gathered that he could connect. As he recently reinstalled the pc, yet does not remember putting in his username/password for internet, it must have been set earlier and not on the pc...... :)

I hope I'm not insulting anyone by pointing out something you already know, but I think I see a possible "culture clash" here:

In the US, ADSL is usually "served" by an external DSL "modem" which is connected by ethernet to the computer. It is then accessed through ethn.

In the UK (& Europe?) ADSL is often/usually(?) "served" by an internal DSL "modem" card w/o any ethernet involved. I have never set one of these up, so I have no idea what ifconfig would show. I do know that SmoothWall Express, a dedicated firewall distro from the UK, can be very confusing to set up for a 1st-timer in the US, because all references to "DSL" do not apply.


OP, How did this system get set up? -- especially is your DSL "modem" internal or external?
