It should be installed. Open a terminal and type "vlc". You can also double click on any mp4 files etc. If you've ripped a DVD, it should play the iso, as well. If you right click on a file and select "Open With->Open With Other Application" you should get a list that includes vlc.
your suggestions, typing "vlc" in a terminal (VLC not found) and using the Open With option on a file (vlc is not shown). It must not have installed. Any suggestions? Thanks.
There are a bunch of versions of vlc there, and I can't help you pick one. But, doesn't sarge have vlc on the Debian site? Have you tried to get it from debian.org?
One more question: is there a reason you're still running sarge, such as an old/slow computer? Etch has been the stable release for quite some time, and it won't be too long before Lenny becomes stable.
Looking at that site again, aren't those all "Woody" versions? Try setting sources.list back to debian.org and whatever your distro is (sarge?, etch?, stable?) and seeing if you can update and then get vlc from there.

I only have used Windows so I am not familiar with Linux. I just bought an Asus PC with Linux pre-loaded on it. Do you know how I can determine which vlc software to load? Thanks.
Is there a reason that you are running Sarge? Sarge is now outdated. It was succeeded by Etch and then by Lenny. Could I suggest that you you change Sarge for Stable in your source list and then run apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade please. You are probably missing out on some security updates and a whole host of features.
Unless there's a good reason for you to run an outdated OS.....?
Can you set your sources.list back to whatever it was before you changed it? Did you keep a backup or write it down or comment it out in the file or something?
Xavier,
I think he just found some old instructions on the net to get vlc and did what they said blindly. It looks like he has an Asus eeepc and I know little to less than nothing about them.
Added:
But for Sure it's not Sarge. It's some Xandros Linux which is a small Debian derivative.

Cool! Now try the "apt-get update" "apt-get install vlc" again. I don't think you'll need the "libdvdcss2" part, but if it's a dependency, it should load automatically after asking you.
