install/upgrade packages using tar.gz as opposed to RPM's
I am a bit confused about installing and upgrading packages in my RH 9. I freshly installed RH 9 after I had issues with FC2. I installed RH 9 from previous ISO's that I had and then updated system through fedora legacy using YUM. I got Mozilla 1.4 and galeon1.2.10 with default install of RH9. I want to upgrade to mozilla 1.6 and higher version of galeon. I looked out for rpm's and they are available.
Here's my question, rpm gives package management capabilities but if i install using tar.gz...how do i manage packages if i install packages using tar.gz?? Till now I've been installing using rpm's but i really want to learn to install using tar.gz. Any tips or pointers would be appreciated.
