I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my husband's laptop. He insists that I install iTunes.
Wine comes with the 10.04 release. I downloaded iTunes 9.2.1.5(32x) and it appeared to install ok. It said it was successful. However, immediately upon the 'installation successful' notification, another window popped up that said, "iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).
Whenever I try to open iTunes, this error message pops up. I used the WINE uninstall option for iTunes, however, the window pops up giving the option to either repair or uninstall, and when I click uninstall it appears to go through the process and even says it did - only to discover the fine print telling me that it "installed" the program sucessfully. This is very frustrating. I cannot seem to get the program to uninstall.
I found a thread that said to delete the files manually, but I don't know how to do this.
I need to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it and make it work.
Is anyone able to help me??
You do realize that whatever you can do in iTunes you can do in Rhythmbox and the Ubuntu One Music Store, right?
I have easily been able to sync my iPod Nano with RhythmBox. And what's more amazing: You can keep your songs! You don't have to wipe out the iPod to sync it with the RhythmBox library like you have to with a new iTunes library!
And here's the extra bonus: The Ubuntu One Music Store is DRM-Free, which means that you can burn as many CDs and sync as many iPods as you want. Also: RhythmBox comes prepackaged on the Ubuntu Live CD!!! As a result, you don't have to install it. It's already there!
Thinking I was all that and a bag of potato chips I figured I'd use the SPM to completely uninstall wine because I thought if I did that, then it would also remove those programs associated with it. After is was completely removed, I clicked on "applications" only to see wine was still there as well as itunes and quicktime!!!!
I then opened the terminal and did: sudo apt-get purge wine. That didn't work either - wine, itunes and quicktime are still there
How can I get rid of iTunes and quicktime without reinstalling the entire OS???
The reason he wants iTunes is because the ability to download e-books, music, podcasts etc., are available right through the iTunes store - he doesn't have to go searching the web for them.
When I opened rhythmbox, I saw it had 2 store options, but when I clicked on them I didn't see how I could 'search' for ebooks, music, podcasts, video etc., like I can with iTunes. That is what is important to him - not to have to leave the store to get what he wants.
