Install Ubuntu

I would like to install Ubuntu onto my HP pavilion laptop. I got thru every thing but am afraid I will loose XP. I am not ready to give up on windows just yet. I follow the screens but it says everything will be destroyed, how can I install a dual boot and not lose win XP.

thanks in advance for your help

defrag your harddrive and then resize the partition with Gnome Partition Editor in System>Admin, then install ubuntu on the new partition

yeah. go into gparted and if you will be using both oses as much as the other, resize the windoze partition (in green in gparted) to about half. then, create a partition in the rest of the space freed as ext3. when it comes to installing ubuntu, just install on that partition
