Install stall

Is there such a thing as a pre-newbie? Yep, can't get installed. Tried Red Hat 7.3 and Mandrake 6.0 on a "Great Quality" brand computer with AMD Sempron, 512 MB and 40G. Both go all the way through installing the packages and stops with device-probe "found some sort of PS/2 mouse -- OK". Can't click on Ok or anything at this point. Switching to a USB mouse gets me to the same point but with "illegal argument". I reformatted and re-partitioned since I seemed to have over 4600 cylinders. I took out and rearranged the memory modules. Just to see if I'd done irreparable damage, reinstalled the Linspire that came pre-loaded and that installed like it was going home. Shall I give up? "Great Quality" doesn't seem very comforting at this point.
Oh, yeah I'm an old Macinatic starting with a brand new IIe, but have been using Windows for too long.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in Linux-Newbie and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

I think the installers you have tried have problems recognizing your hardware. They have a reason. Mandrake 6.0 was released 6 years ago or so (I'm not sure if it has USB support at all...), RH 7.3 comes from 2001 or 2002. Please try with a newer distro. Linux has changed much in the last years. Newest Mandrake is Mandriva 2006. RedHat desktop version is now called Fedora.
