Install Red Hat 9.0 from XP [Newbie]
 

Hi

Im having trouble with installing Linux on my XP machine. The thing is i want to have my two XP partitions left after installing Linux. I really need a good guide how to do this, anyone?

Here i how i would be doing it if you do not correct me.

1. I use PartitionMagic and take free space from D: (one of the XP partitions) and create a another NTFS partition (L:) .

2. Boot from CD and start the install and choose L: and let the wizard do all those strange partitions (Ext2, Ext3, SWAP)

3. Get a few errors.

4. Kill myself

Use partition magic and delete L: , leave it unpartitioned and try again.
or create partitions manuallly with disk druid, you only need a swap and a root partition (use a slash as mount point)

There is no need to create a new NTFS partition. Depending on what distribution you are planning to install, there are different options as to what you can do:

a) Manually create partitions (You have to learn more or less what each one does and you create them :) ).
b) Use your PartitionMagic program to get some unformatted space in your hard disk and once you are installing Linux, select "Install in unformatted space"
c) Keep your disks as they are and select the option "Install in unused Windows space" (I think I saw this one in Mandrake... I don't really trust it :P )
