Question Install problems Ubuntu 14.04lts dual disc SATA & PATA

System is an HP Compaq SR2180NX with SATA-300 drive in IDE mode, and one PATA-100 drive in PATA port 0. The SATA is allocated in hardware detect as IDE:0:0 and the PATA is IDE:1:1.
O.K., that's the bare facts. Was an XP box (not going to spend $300 USD on a new box just so I can give Micro$ another $199 USD) that once had dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 lts.
So, install went well, all good, restart at the end...nada. Black screen and nothing else. Press hardware restart and NO DELAY restarted computer.
Strong indicator of no operating system at all.
Tried swapping installs, manually partitioning HD's, everything I could think of.
Rebooting from SystemRescueCD "boot Linux already on target" worked GREAT (except for another problem not meaningful here)
Found a workaround, disconnect the PATA hard drive and install to SATA, then reconnect PATA and partition from terminal with sudo gparted to access the drive space.
My serious question to all you noobs out there.
What on EARTH could have caused that?

Maybe not a noob any more, but I'll give it a shot.
This is (probably) caused by the SATA/PATA mix - several distros have issues with this. The BIOS presents the devices in one boot order (probably PATA first), and the Linux init scripts assign /dev/sda to something different (the SATA).

Go here, and do as it says - post the RESULTS.txt so we can see what evidence is left. Be aware that if you decide to add another system (dual boot), this issue may arise again.
