Install problems

I tried installing and running Ibex on a eee pc 701 from the Alpha stage and used the upgrade distro route however the first time I tried it didn't work, then afterwards it did a partial upgrade which got somewhat completed in the Beta and in the final release, now my wi-fi is out and the shortcut keys don't work even after doing the tweaks on help.Ubuntu. I had better success with my Hardy install which is quite smooth on the 701. Sorry for the lengthy intro but I was wondering if that partial upgrade flaw ( I don't know how to check to see that all the packages for an Ibex install are finally all there, like where do you get a list of all softwares that are in the install) was the reason why my Ibex install doesn't have wi-fi even after doing the tweaks. I am waiting for my ShipIt CDs to arrive so I can do a clean install but would also like to install a couple of other distros on dual or maybe triple boot in grub. How do I go about it? Any advice on any links to check out? Does a multi-boot system on an external Hard drive have any disadvantages? Are there any particular distros that have issues when dual booted with another distro or other distros in Grub? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

To check for and install missing packages, open the terminal and type:

Quote:

sudo apt-get install updates
As for multi-boot systems, you can have as many as your HDD can hold. Each new install will check for installed systems and configure Grub to include them in a menu at startup. Just make sure, when presented with the option, that you allow enough space for your current system(s) to "grow". I'm not personally aware of any that have a problem with multi-booting. I'm also not aware of any disadvantages to using an external drive.

Hope this helps
