Unhappy install packages on unbuntu: shouldn't be that complicated, right?

Hi, everyone. I'm a newbie, and I just install unbuntu on my laptop.
But the emacs editor was not installed. I used the .rpm packages before.
But them can't be used on unbuntu. So I download the .deb packages from package.debian.org. Usually when I install a package, it will tell me
"error: it depends on...", so I must install some other packages.I think maybe it's a little complicate. it must be?? or there is some easy way.
I need your help. TIA.

Which way are you installing the .deb packages?

The easiest way is to go system > administration > synaptic package manager. There you can search the package you want select it and apply. All the dependencies will be downloaded and installed automatically.

Or if you prefer a console sudo apt-get install name-of-package
It works the same, you just don't have the gui with apt-get..

You should use the package manager that comes with your distro whenever possible. This will avoid a lot of problems.
