Install new splash theme

Ok sorry to sound helpless but once again I'm new at this and cant make heads or tails of what ive been reading. I want to install a new GDM splash. I downloaded a file: 108891-Mint.tar.gz and its in my downloads folder. Ive installed startup manager but im stuck with where to go from there. The file is for the login screen and the screen thats behind it, in the background. Can anyone help me to get it on my computer??? I am runnin Linux Mint 8 Helena main edition. Thank you for any help you can offer.

You should see if it's available in packagemanager first.
Also are you using grub , grub2?

you are most likely using grub 2 if you have the latest version of mint . that is irrelevant though ..

No disrepect, but I had to enable boot splash thru /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme.
