Install Linux on Promise RAIDed system
Hi,
I am running WindowsXP on a home-built system with a Gigabyte 8I-EXP that contains a Promise RAID controller. It is running under RAID - 0. I am looking to partition my system and install Linux. Does anyone know of, or have experience with a Linux distribution that can handle this? Promise doesn't seem to have drivers for this controller as it is an OEM version. Gigabyte seems to lack them as well. Thanks in advance, Howard  |
RedHat worked for me... I am running a similar board with 2 ATA 100 Promise PCI cards. 10 hard drives total, some differently raided than others. I use RH 7.3...

Any linux distribution can handle this. It's just a kernel question!

Soothsayer, there are drivers for the promise boards but none I can find for the promise chips on a motherboard

That doesn't matter as long as you get drivers for
the right chips, or close. I have a few boards with highpoint raid chips built in, and the same linux drivers work with several versions of those chips, and with highpoint cards too. I currently have a promise controller card in this motherboard. Anyway, it's just important to get drivers for the right chip. it doesn't matter whether it's on the motherboard or a card. try the driver that matches most closely to your chip. |
