The SD card in a USB carrier and the SD card directly in the slot.

Thank you all for your assistance, but this is moot because Linux is installed and it runs.

When my external drive arrives in the mail I'll report back on whether the netbook will boot from it.

To close out the thread: I bought an external CD/DVD drive, created a boot disk, and the netbook booted from it. So you guys are right.

This is off topic for the thread, but a quick question: If I now install Ubuntu from the CD, will it create and install into its own partition or will it overwrite Win7? I can't find anything on the Ubuntu web site that answers that simple but fundamental question.

Will it create a new partition or must there already be one?

^ i never installed ubuntu but i know that the fedora-live-usb install to harddrive script runs gparted about halfway thru the install process and asks the user if they want to overwrite, create, or resize existing partitions.
