install linux on laptop?

Hello,

Real newby here.

I will be installing suse 9 or libranet. Is it possible to install linux on a laptop? I have read in a few places that there can be difficulty doing this, but I don't know if it's gbecause of a specific kind of laptop, particular distros or it's just generallly a problem. I have a toshiba satellite 5205 series s505...mobile intel p4-m at 2.2 ghz, 512 ram, 60 gb hard drive, nvidia geforce4 460 go, integrated v.92/56k modem, integrated 10/100 ethernet lan.

I may want to partition and keep xp on part of the computer.

thanks,
Laura Callier

The only problem I had with linux on a laptop was exiting X without installing drivers for my Geforce 4 Go,it would cause my screen to go all scrambled looking.Besides that everything pretty much worked like my linux box.

Yeah, you shouldnt see many problems, atleast none that you cannot overcome. Give it a go, we are here 24/7 for any problems you run into. I run Linux On my toshiba, and it has worked flawlessly.

Thanks for your replies! OK, I'll go ahead. I'm most nervous about getting the partition right, but hopefully the discs come installation instructions. Hope to get rid of windows by years end and just have mac and linux...we'll see!
