Install linux from a partitioned pendrive?
I would like to use half of my 16gb pendrive to keep files and the other to install linux. Is it possible?

I don't mean to boot a live linux distro but to install linux from a bootable image on the pendrive. Can it be done from a partitioned pendrive. |
Yes, it can be done. For example for Debian (other distro's i don't know, some are a bit touchy when installing to a pendrive).
Go for expert-mode (might work with the usual mode too). During partitioning point it to the stick (if necessary choose "manual partitioning"). At the end of the installation you will be asked if you want to install grub: choose yes. You will be asked:"to the mbr". Choose: "no" You will be asked:"where then?". Point it to the partition of the pendrive. Make sure the PC('s) are able to boot from USB. Else check this: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=33094 That is the main problem, besides that its a usual installation. PS: i don't want to push you to use Debian for this. I simply don't know how and if (at all) it works for other OSes. I think it should. |

Check out this website, it may have what you are looking for.

Actually might also look at pendrivelinux and a few others like Opensuse how to's. Opensuse needs to be partitioned.
To be quite simple, most distro's now can easily be installed to a pendrive just as one would install it to a normal hard drive. The only issue is that grub on the pendrive may in some cases need to be edited or use find. It is possible that in weird situations your drives do not appear in same order. It should always work on your computer as you want. There is little use in making a partition really. Most flash drive installs can easily have a new folder added for any other files you want to carry around. |
