Install linux directly from images on HDD

Hi all
I have downloaded iso files of suse linux. Now i want to install it but not with the common methods.
I currently have windows on my machine as well as redhat9.
I want that i get an entry in my boot loader which when selected the installation setup of suse should run and then when it will ask for location where iso files are kept i give it the path of where the files are stored on the HDD.
It is to be supposed that there is no LAN so booting thru PXE is no possible at present.

So is this possible anyhow or not
Thanks

If i understand correctly, you want to do the following: copy the iso files in your HD- maybe in a folder of your redhat installation- and then when Suse installation starts, you'd like to provide the path to the iso files. You want to do the installation from a local file directory.
Please confirm...

The fedora core website provides info on how to install FC from the iso's mounted on a hard drive. I imagine those instructions are similar for other distros.

the instructions are here

You should upgrade redhat 9 to Fedora core 4, the replacement for RHL

FC is better and newer

I beg to differ: FC4 is newer, and does have a number improvements with respect to RH9. It is however also 'experimental' in the sense that it's a development distro that is being used for testing purposes. Improvements that have been tested and found to work and be stable are then included in RH. So FC is NOT the replacement of RHL, but the testbank. Still, if you use linux for you r personal computer, and not in a company where stability is much more important, updating RHL to FC4 is a sensible move.

Well Well i m not looking for a discussion on whether i shoud use RH9 or fedora.
Yes i have the iso's copied to the HDD but i want that i should be able to run the installation setup directly from the HDD and not from any other boot media like floppy or cd or network.
I donot want to create any bootable cd or floppy.
All i want is that i should have an entry in my bootloader which should point to the suse installation startup
Which is the file that is called when the setup is to begin

This is what i want to know

Did you check the link I provided?

Aseem 11-28-2005 04:29 AM

Yes i checked the link and in its previous page it says u booted with pxe, or usb media
Now what i want is that i should be able to bring up the bootloader directly from the HDD rather than using some other device like usb, floppy, cdrom, network card....

from Fedora Project:
Quote:

The installation method screen below appears if one of the following is true:

1. You booted with PXE, or USB media.
2. You entered the askmethod option at the boot: prompt.
So this also works if you boot from an install cd.
STill I imagine that's not what you want either. All I can say for now is that I've never seen an installation method from grub...

Aseem,

Are asking how to bypass burning a physical CD from the .iso image of a bootable install CD?

Are you hoping for a way to transfer control to the .iso & have it boot as if it were a physical CD?

AFAIK, that is not currently possible, but I would love to hear that I am wrong. I also wouldn't mind an exposition of the technical difficulties in doing this (booting an .iso).

If I understand what you're asking there is already a discussion here:
