Install Linux

I tried to install linux 17.1 from a usb drive from the command menu when you first turn your computer on, the boot menu. It told me no operating system. I am positive it is on the usb drive. What do I do ????

Hi & Welcome to Linux Questions.

In order for your pc to see the usb bootable stick with 17.1 on it you have to go into the BIOS and set your boot order to usb. Once your in your BIOS arrow over to boot and make the first choice "usb"

If the option to choose usb as the first boot order than turn off your pc. Plug in the usb stick and than as your pc is booting up press the key to get into your BIOS and it should show than.

Responding to the questions posed above will be a good first step toward getting a solution. Additionally, there are over 500 different Linux distributions so it would be a good idea if you indicated which it is you are using. I will guess Mint 17.1? From the information you have posted, we have to assume this is a computer with no operating system currently installed, is that correct? It would be a good idea to mention if you do have an operating system currently installed and if so, what is it?

there is no operating system called "linux 17.1"

Linux is the kernel and that is ether a 3 or 4 version ( maybe a 2.6 if a older OS )

there is a os by the name of Mint that has a version 17.1

is this what you are using ?

and HOW did you put the ISO image on the usb drive ?
you have to make a BOOTABLE drive

copy/paste will NOT work
