install drivers,applications ?

Dear sir:

I am a totally newbie just trying to use mandrake 9.2 and others distro.
I am having many problems doing install drivers and software once i downloaded from internet or cd-rom.Because I used to winxp method of running application.
Can i just click the icon to install? or any command line? I have no ideas of any code to use with,only guess.....

do i need to be root to use these code?
and what about tty0-tty1------tty7 ? please help me! i will probably mess up with my linux !!!

and I am willing to learn new things about linux and taking risk of it.Anyone should suggests any books for reading list for learning linux command line,basic usages.....for such newbie???? I am so excited about learning linux and hope for any 1 willing to teach me.thank in advance.

P.S... I have troble using dvd player both in kde and gnome. totem player is very laggy playing dvd and creppy sounds??? what's going on?
what was it required something in order to play dvd ?

If you do a search of these boards you'll find lots of threads on how to install software.

Probably the best thing you can do to start is to read up on rpm.

"man rpm" or "info rpm" should help you a lot.

Yes, you need to be root to install software, however, and this is true for 95% of what you want to do, the Mandrake manuals are awesome. Specifically, here is what you are looking for....
