install debian
I am installing debian linux on an hp vectra 550 mhz
I go throught the install using an old woody iso-- after id do apt-get dist-upgrade or an aptitude dist-upgrade linux will not boot I have tried both writing to the boot sector or the other lilo file When I boot it starts the lilo, but only types li and then freezes I have tried the install three times and each time i dist upgrade same result! I was suspicious that i started it wrong bu know I wonder if I am using a woody kernel on a sarge install? It is an old iso that i am installing from! Thanks in advance for any help whitbacon |
Woody is really old. Your best bet is to get a sarge cd and install that. I'm not sure if this is a kernel problem but it could be cause you're probably using a 2.2 kernel or so now which is really old. Did you check if the lilo files are still ok?

How do you check that
|
in a terminal type uname -a
|
Open /etc/lilo.conf. Go down to the lines that should boot and see if the partitions listed there are ok.
