Install Bootloader alone

Is it possible to install either GRUB or LILO on their own without installing a Distro?

currently I have a box running Fedora Core 2 (it used to have WinXP too, but for various reasons I deleted it) and want to re-install WinXP onto the machine. I know that when I do this Windows will ...umm... "forget" about the Linux installation, but not damage it.

so when I re-install Windows, is there a way I can install a bootloader without reinstalling Fedora Core 2?

Thanks!

Yes. You can install a bootloader while you are running on Fedora. You have to have a temporary way to get into Fedora. You could use a boot floppy or a rescue CD. Then if you are using grub you edit /boot/grub/grub.conf and issue the command:
grub-install /dev/hda
(assuming that you boot /dev/hda)

If you are using lilo you edit /etc/lilo.conf and then issue:
lilo

i think you can install win, after that you can boot linux with a bootfloppy ( make one , if you don't have it )
then run lilosetup ( or any other program to install lilo )

or you can edit the file ' /etc/lilo.conf by hand and after saving type ' lilo '.

Rescue CD? If I was to put the first CD (of 4) that Fedora Core was supplied on into my CD drive, and type "linux rescue" at the boot prompt that will do the same job wont it?

Dont have a floppy drive on my system.
