In order to use it you need to make sure it has a filesystem on it, then you have to mount it somewhere, then it can be used to store data.
You would usually do this by partitioning with fdisk, creating a file system with something like mkfs.ext4, then mounting it to where you want to use it.
To mount it permanently you would add and entry to /etc/fstab.

Typing it all out would take me all day, but here are the steps:
Using fdsik:
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2010/09/linux-fdisk/
Only you will know for certain which file system you want to use but for two of the the most common:
http://linux.die.net/man/8/mkfs.ext3
http://linux.die.net/man/8/mkfs.ext4
To understand fstab:
http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html

If you've and questions about or problems with the individual steps post here and someone will be sure to help.
