install
Okay, I am completely new to installing linux. I had CDs of Redhat 7.3 but while installing it gave cpio error. On the forum I got information that I need to map the memory so I tried:
linux mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=511M@1M (my box has 512 MB of ram) after several other trials I just decided to download Redhat 9.0. I have a completely new hard drive 10 GB and I downloaded iso files on that hard drive. Now I am trying to install from the hard disk. I changed the bios setting to boot from the hard disk ( the one I downloaded the iso on) but could not install. Do I need anything else then iso images. In the installation document they mention about making installation CDs they mention that I should copy isolinux directory, wheres that?? Anways it will be a great help if someone explained how do I install from here on. i.e. after copying the three .iso on the hard drive what steps to peform to install linux Thanks Jigs |
If you have the ISO's, then you can burn them using easycd creator, nero if some app like that.

Have you looked at RH's website for installation documentation?
Its probably easier to burn the ISOs to CD and install. To install via hard drive you need to create a boot floppy using the image from the /image directory on the 1st CD. |
Thanks tangle and michael. I burned CDs and I succesfully installed RH9. There was one problem though. I installed linux on a second hard disk and then tried rebooting the system from that hard drive. The screen freezes and all I can see is GRUB prompt on the screen and can not enter any command.
To make sure I installed grub on the first sector of boot partition since I wanted dual boot my windows 2000 and linux. Since my floppy drive is not working I did not create a boot disk. Then I restarted linux in rescue mode and it mounted linux partition on /mnt/sysimage. But after reboot it still doesnot boot into linux. Thanks |
