That version of Mandriva, which I've used before from the live CD, is not stable. Try downloading or purchasing the full 32 or 64 bit version from the Mandriva store. Mandriva, formerly known as Mandrake, is an excellent version of Linux and shouldn't give you all that much grief. It is also possible that the download image is corrupt. You could try downloading it again and/or burning another disk.

I'll always have a good feeling for Mandriva. My first install of Linux ever was Mandrake 10.1.

You can get the download here. http://www2.mandriva.com/downloads/

Download the FULL VERSION of the DVD for the install. Download the Live CD to see if Mandriva runs on your hardware.

Yes, you can install from the Live CD. Don't do this. You'll get a functional but barebones install of Mandriva or end up downloading lots of additional apps and then having to tweak them.

As always, try to have access to a wired Ethernet network when doing your first install. If you have problems finding drivers for the wireless or want to get online during the install itself, this makes it much easier. Of course, this isn't necessary just easier.
