insserv problem

When trying to setup VMWare Player with vmware-config.pl I get this error message:

insserv: Service network has to be enabled for service VMware
insserv: exiting now!

I get a similar message when I try to setup my Speedtouch modem to connect automatically at startup. The speedtouchconf script provided by Steve Parker gets it working. The script then asks if I want to set it to automatically dial-up when the PC boots up. I answer 'Yes' and then I get the following error message:

insserv: Service ALL has to be enabled for service speedtouch
insserv: exiting now!
init command failed

How do I get insserv working?

Have given up. Installed Kubuntu instead.
