Initial Linux setup
Well This is going to be one of my first personal linux experiances and I kinda figured I would set up a little FTP/general server with my linux box on my home network, just wanted to get any tips on initial setup you might have. First off I was kinda thinking about running RAID on this box, I have an OLD Promise ATA66 RAID controller that I was thinking about throwing into the box. Anyways here's what I'm using for hardware.
Intel P3 600MhzEB ASUS P3V4X 512Mb PC133 SDRAM Voodoo 3 3000 80GB Western Digital Special Eddition HD 52x CD-ROM Anyways I kinda figured this would be more then enough to work on a simple linux file server with. Now I was looking at distros the only one I have ever worked with before was slackware. Now I could care less about newbie friendly nice GUI distros like fedora, mandrake and lindows, since this is not an everyday use machine. Simply put I want to put this up so I can learn how to use a distro of linux in a server application, I was looking into either Debian or SUSE. I should be building and installing sometime next week, thanks for any input you can give :) I figured not only would this give me some knowledge of linux but some working experiance with samba on decent sized networks :) |

Many servers don't bother with a GUI at all and run everything from the command line. With SuSE you do this by setting the run level to 3 which does not automatically start the GUI. To set the run level to 3 in SuSE edit /etc/inittab and change this line: id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault: ___________________________________ Be prepared. Well I would not be adverse to doing everything console (that is kinda how I was thinking about running it actually ^^) but there are some apps I would like to run that I think some KDE would be nice for, I would like to able to run kazza, and I don't think that can be done without a GUI (alternativel I would like to run k++, but I don't know if it is compatible with linux, nor am I worried about spyware with linux ^^). So in the end I would kinda like to have KDE on there just to screw with, although thank you very much for the suggestion.
Here's my other question, i heard that debian is kinda tough to get running, SuSE is supposed to be easier and I kinda thought I might add gentoo on there as well seeing as how distros are normally rather small. what are your thoughts on what might be the best distro for me? =) |
there isn't a k++ or kazaa port for linux. u will have to install apollon, which is the only one i know of that connects to kazaa but it doesn't return as many on a search nor is the speed as high
|
Really, I thought you could run kazza out of linux, I actually sweat I've seen kazza running on a newer version of gentoo on KDE3.2.
EDIT: BTW from what i have been reading about debian it seems like getting it up and running is a nightmare! And once people do finally get it running it seems like gentoo/slackware is the general preference. So i thinkI may seriously be reconsidering my choice of distros. |
u can run kazaa with wine or crossover, but there isn't a port for linux. there was at one time, but people stopped the upkeep. At least what i know of. I could always be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time.....lol
