Question init not working

I am unable to run the several commands like:
init 0
init 6
shutdown.....etc..

The error message is "bash command not found."
I am using RH9.

Can anyone please help.

have you permission to execute /bin/bash and have you /bin in the $PATH statement?

Those cmds need to be run by root user. You can try giving the complete path eg

/sbin/init ...
/sbin/shutdown

Incidentally, that distro (if you mean RH9 codename Shrike) hasn't been updated in years (inc security!) and will have issues with modern HW. Do yourself (and us) a favour and get a modern distro; try Centos 5.5 (free version of RHEL) or Fedora 12
