INIT: id 'x' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I installed xine media player, and after i rebooted my computer, I got the message:

"INIT: id 'x' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"

I can still login to linux, but when i type the command "startx" in terminal, X window loads, and I can see the GUI for a few seconds... This then leads to an abrupt exit of X Window and I am back to the terminal.

I googled and searched this site for information on this error message, but couldn't find a solution hence I am posting this.

make sure your host can either see the dns server or your hosts file has its correct address (if you have nsswitch.conf set to files).
