infrared port for printer

Can anyone shed some light on what I need to do to get the infrared port on my Dell Inspiron 8000 to work? It is duel booted with win/Me , and the port works with my Canon BJC-50 printer on the windows side, but I can't seem to configure it on Mandrake 9.1 . Thanks in advance for any help.

Probably the best source of information is the Infrared HOWTO:

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Infrared-HOWTO/

which explains how to set up the Irda hardware under linux. For more general information there is also the 'Linux on Mobile Computers' site:

http://www.tuxmobile.org/

Hope that's useful, in the absence of more specific information.
