information on users


Hi there,

I am new to linux, While configuring FTP i created a user to access it, i have a doubt- what is difference in creating user for normal server access and the user created for FTP access. in a case if i want to profile certain user access of only FTP but not the server login then where i have to make changes.. any help in this regards will be appreciated.

Hi,

If you want your user to have only ftp access and not a shell login, you can assign him with a shell that is for this purpose. Check /etc/shells to find the one for your distro (usually something like /bin/false, /bin/nologin). Then run as root:

usermod -s /bin/false username
to change previous shell
