Info/Advice On Updating KDE To 3.5
 

Hello

I have Suse 10.0 installed and am loving my first foray into Linux. I see that KDE has a new version out. Should I upgrade, and if so how hard is it to do, and where to get best advice on how to do it? I appreciate any help given.

I personally think the best thing to do is wait until it shows up in your distros package repository (If it's not there already. Sues uses YUM, right?), and then install/upgrade it from there. KDE is a rather complex beast and I've had problems in the past upgrading even with prebuilt packages (mostly due to dependencies). Building it yourself would probably be even harder, especially for a newcomer.

Also, I'm using KDE 3.5.2 myself now, and I hardly even noticed when it updated. The improvements are mostly gradual, a tweak here and there. I don't think there's anything in it that's "must have" right away.

Suse uses YaST2, and I think that I can get it from the site, but if you feel not overly worthwhile yet, then I'll take that advice. Appreciate the help.

Some people have a need to always have the latest SW---even if they don't know what is in it. To me, it is generally safer to stay one update behind.
In the world of Open Source, this wisdom may not be so valid. Often, there are very small updates that ARE important for security, etc. For example, Firefox now automatically updates itself--up to 1.5.0.3 now. Somehow I trust them not to be screwing things up.
On a Windows box, I try desperately to keep the auto update turned off.
