Does this help?

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...nds...-386010/

It seems that it was a problem with the permissions on /tmp and was fixed using

chmod 1777 /tmp

This links mentions how to boot into recovery mode:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/24920

You should be able to hit escape when the grub bootloader starts up and enter "failsafe" or choose recovery mode from the grub menu
