Question increase size of root partition.....


i m trying to increase the size of root partition in fedora 16 .. how i m supposed to do it..??

I usually use gparted live CD for jobs like this.

Download the provided ISO file, burn it on a CD, boot from the CD and use the Gparted GUI software to make changes to your partitions.

I agree. If you are not too sure and confident with commands, using a Live tool like gparted will save some headache for you. It will help you change the size of the partition using a GUI window. But be careful while extending a root partition. I have had issues with it. Not sure why.

you also can create a new partition and move a part of the root filesystem onto the new partition. That could be /var, /opt ....

You cannot resize a partition which is currently in use. After downloading the gparted live CD boot from it and resize the partition from there. As long as the partition is not mounted, you can do whatever you need to do with it but be careful while resizing the root partition.
