Please see last line ======================= I want to install FLASH PLAYER on my Fedora-18 computer. I downloaded Flash Player --- it came as a "tar".... I did $chmod +x ...to make it executable I moved the file-- $mv install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz /etc/ I changed directory to /etc and issued the command: #yum install install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz System went through the steps of an apparent "load" operation but then returned the error message visible as the last line of the display: ============== Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit fedora-local-packages | 3.8 kB 00:00 !!! fedora-local-updates | 3.9 kB 00:00 !!! adobe-linux-i386 | 951 B 00:00 fedora/18/i386/metalink | 19 kB 00:00 rpmfusion-free-updates | 3.3 kB 00:00 rpmfusion-nonfree-updates | 3.3 kB 00:00 updates/18/i386/metalink | 16 kB 00:00 updates | 4.6 kB 00:00 updates/primary_db | 7.9 MB 01:03 rpmfusion-nonfree-updates/prim FAILED http://mirror.us.leaseweb.net/rpmfus...ry.sqlite.bz2: [Errno 14] curl#22 - "The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found" Trying other mirror. rpmfusion-nonfree-updates/primary_db | 184 kB 00:02 updates/group_gz | 388 kB 00:02 No package install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz available. ============== I have reviewed everything for typographic error....find none.. I have verified that the executable file: install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz ....is present in the /etc/ directory I note the additional error mssgs: rpmfusion-nonfree-updates/prim FAILED ---and---- http://mirror.us.leaseweb.net/rpmfus...ry.sqlite.bz2: [Errno 14] curl#22 - "The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found" ================= 1) I don't know what to make of these error messages. The file-to-be-installed is not RPM. When you receive a "download" file, isn't that file all-four-corners sufficient all-by-itself? 2) I don't know what to do next to get Flash Player on my system 3) WAS I PRUDENT in placing this file over in the /etc directory before attempting to open it? Is /etc the right place? WILL/WOULD programs that need it, FIND it there on-their-own? (I want to keep my /home directory pretty-much "clean"......for motivations that are unclear even to me.....except that I have compuslive "clean-genes"... : ) 4) Just-for-drill, I issued the command #RPM -i install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz ...and received the error-mssg: error: install_flash_player_11_linux.i386.tar.gz: not an rpm package (or package manifest): ================ jwsmith |
i think the tarball you downloaded contains source code to compile your own flash player if you wanted. i remember having to go to the adobe website and choosing which version of linux i had and the install was automatic.
i googled. these seem to be instructions using the command line: x86_64 (64-bit) sudo yum install http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe...0-1.noarch.rpm -y x86 (32-bit) sudo yum install http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe...0-1.noarch.rpm -y Install the Adobe Flash web browser plugin The first command imports the GPG key for the Adobe Flash plugin repository and the second command installs the plugin itself. sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux sudo yum install flash-plugin -y source: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Flash#...browser_plugin |

I get around this by having 2 directories in home: .add_software and .win_software. In .add_software there are all the installation scripts, .deb or source code of any software on my system that has not been installed though apt (I'm on Debian), with the exception of software running under WINE (there is actually more as I have updated the system, including full fresh installs and have not cleared it in a while) . There is also some text files with names of the form <distro>-<verrsion_number>_installed_software.log the file is of the form Code:
YYYYMMDD <Method> <software> <version> <filename> <Date_Removed> Software under WINE is kept in a simmilar way but I don't keep track of it (I only have 2 windows apps installed (LTSpice and notepad++)). As these directories are hidden the don't really clutter $HOME to much and it it is very difficult to keep $HOME clean of hidden files (most software will drop a dir in there on first use, although it's getting better since lots of software set up it's dir in $HOME/.local/<package>). As I have said I use this on debian but the idea should work on any distro. |
Open terminal and copy-paste every line on by one and hit enter... you are done. here i assume yours is x86 system. if you want to know more just check link at last line.
