In your opinion...

...which distro should a n00b start with (and why)? Which one reflects best Linux (and not all these commercial stuff like user friendly interfaces, wizards etc...)?

hmmmmm... the question isn't really clear is it?

The reason of my question is that I wanna get more into Linux but I don't wanna keep learning the way I did so far...

(I do use books tho (Running Linux))

For example I (kinda) got used to SuSE now, and when I want to change my screen resolution I use YaST2, which isn't actually a good idea cos now I'm trying out RH9 and obviously YaST2 isn't there, so I just feel like an idiot not being able to change the screen resolution... :(

Basically I'd like to learn the stuff that apply to pretty much any version (from any distro) of Linux but I don't know what distro would be best for that...?

Thx!

This has been covered lots of times in other threads. Take a look at the distro's forum.

hmmmmm... can't find a post that really answers my question... :(
can you help?;)

DaDdY SnEb 05-30-2003 07:47 AM

oops... hadn't seen there were threads withing the distro section... lol

I'd only seen the 3 sub sections... sorry ;)

You want any distro that doesn't do much or you. Slackware is the one that springs to mind, but with any distro you can choose to not use the admin tools like YaST2 and edit the files directly yourself.

cheers

yeah but i didn't know that when I got SuSE first, I thought YaST was part of Linux and not of the SuSE distro... /mees feeling ashamed... ;)

Perhaps Gentoo or Linux from Scratch would appeal to you.

I learned a lot installing and running Gentoo.
