In search of simplified Howto's (compiling kernel)

As the forum is labeled I am newbie. And as I have been searching google.com/linux for howto's All I have been able to find are howto's written for what appears to be more advanced users.

So if anybody here knows of a good site or documentation that can in simplified terms explain how to recompile my kernel. Or use the kernel configurator in KDE? I know it is probably really simple but I don't want to take anychances.

I'm Running RedHat 8.0 and I don't use a boot loader I use a boot floppy.

Normally I wouldn't want to do that but I've been having problems with my CDRW and believe the answer lies in re configuring the kernal to better suit my system.

Unless someone here can help me with that process.

Thanks to anyone that can help. I would really like to learn to love this system.

PS. IS it possible to install a boot loader after installation.

Have you been to The Linux Documentation Project Pages or to The Linux Kernel Archives ?

These 2 sites are a wealth of information. Alternatively, issue 29 (July 2002) of Linux Format gave instructions and other sites for kernel patching. Go to the Linux Format webpages to see about ordering back issues.

Hope this helps.
