imaging HD

i've got gentoo 2004.3 installed right now on my ibook, but i'd like to try a new distro. problem is, my HD is already all partitioned up, and i'd rather not lose my gentoo installation. i've invested a lot of time into it, and its 95% the way i want it, i don't want to have to do all that work over again.

so, i got this program for os x that can read ext3 partitions. my idea was to hook up the ibook to my imac(running os x), start the ibook in FW target mode, and image the HD using disk copy. will this work? will it still boot when i copy it back to my ibook?

I don't know about the Mac application but "dd" will clone a disk.
