Im stuck please help me install Redhat 9
Hi
Sorry to ask the simplest of questions but im stuck. Im totally new to linux and i just cant figure this out. Basically what im trying to do is boot from the cd rom to install Redhat 9. Ive set the bios settings but it just wont boot (i have no floppy). Ive tried to make an installation boot cd rom from the 140page instructions ive printed off from the red hat site. But ive been tring to do this in dos and the commads are just not recognoised (im a competent windows user). Is this correct?? Please help im at a loss to get these cds running. If you need more info let me know Thanks for your help |
Welcome to LQ :)
Where does the CD come from? Did you burn it from an ISO yourself? Cheers, Tink |
Hi...thanks
Yes I have burnt them from isos, Ive got three cds First one has files called dosutils,Redhat, images and isolinux then a load of readmes |
In the /images folder on disc 1, there is a file called boot.iso
Use boot.iso to create another CD - this will be your boot disc. :) |
Yeh ive tried that one
Basically I unzipped the iso to see the files ie. outlook files that i cant open??No idea what they are............... and some img files and a Boot Security Catalog file with some other files too Ive burnt them to cd in nero Rbt PC But still nothing Got two drives here tried in both but still wont boot from cd even though the bios is set to boot from cd What am I doing wrong?? |
How did you burn the ISO files. Look at the CD's, do then contain directories and files or is it just one file *.iso? If it is the later then you did not burn the CD's correctly. If you unzipped then burned you probably did not create them as a bootable CD. Or you have a corrupted download file.

On the cds I have tried I have 12 files
boot.cat boot.msg gerneral.msg initrd.img isolinux.bin isolinux.cfg options.msg param.msg rescue.msg snake.msg splash.lss vmlinuz I did as you said unzipped and burned them as above in nero Is this wrong?? How do I create a bootable cdrom?? Ive tried this but nothing seems to work in windows. 1.4.2. Making an Installation Boot CD-ROM isolinux is now used for booting the Red Hat Linux installation CD. To create your own CD-ROM to boot the installation program, use the following instructions: Copy the isolinux/ directory from the first Red Hat Linux CD-ROM into a temporary directory (referred to here as <path-to-workspace>) using the following command: cp -r <path-to-cd>/isolinux/ <path-to-workspace> Change directories to the <path-to-workspace> directory you have created: cd <path-to-workspace> Make sure the files you have copied have appropriate permissions: chmod u+w isolinux/* Finally, issue the following command to create the ISO image file: mkisofs -o file.iso -b isolinux.bin -c boot.cat -no-emul-boot \ -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -R -J -v -T isolinux/ |
I'm not sure with Nero, but with EZ CD creator under the file menu is an option to burn cd image. I select that, then it will open a file chooser dialog. I change the file type to .iso then browse to the directory where I have saved the iso then select it. Then simply hit the Record button and after a minute or two it finishes and I have a bootable linux distro!
Not sure how to do this with nero, but look for an option to burn cd image or something like it. J |
Ive done that
Specified to open the boot.iso file in the images folder in nero (specified file types to iso) It burns the cd but still wont boot Ive even downloaded CD1 again from redhats ftp but still no luck I may try Mandrake Instead :) |
