|
i recommend another distribution to start with
CentOS is a distrubution bulit on REDHAT enterprise linux for server needs in my opinion. i would start with an easier option... there are a lot of dists out there. search google for linux desktop distributions ... i would recommend starting with ubunto linux ... easy to install and designed to be a desktop OS ...
for your current installation i would try to type the following from the shell: Code:
startx Code:
init 5 |
A personal recommendation: CentOS is not necessarily the most newbie-friendly Linux distribution. It's focus is making an Open-Source Enterprise Linux environment that remains entirely community based. I'm not saying it's not a good distribution or a great goal, but I would recommend you try something else to get your feet wet.
Try downloading Ubuntu from www.ubuntu.org. It's much more friendly to the newcomer, and will get you straight to a graphical interface. However, if you really want to get into CentOS to start with, try typing: Code:
startx Code:
Xorg -configure I would try Ubuntu. One of the great things about Linux is the sheer number of distributions available, and how easy it is to move from one to the next until you find one you like. Edit: Looks like waelaltaqi and I posted at the same time. Heh. |
hey i looked for ubunto like you said but i could only find ubuntu linux is that it
|
let me add something here...
As a newbie, you have to realize that linux is a shell based operating system modified to work as a desktop environment.Windows is completley GUI with some command line support. Windows has only one desktop environment which means that there is only one design to work with your computer graphically. in linux there are many desktop environments bulit on X window system ... mainly KDE and GNOME are your options i think that you didn't install any desktop support with your CentOS installation. that's why we are recommending another distribution. |

And as waelaltaqi said, Linux offers many graphical environment choices. Here's what I suggest: download Ubuntu AND Kubuntu (www.kubuntu.org). They are the same system with different graphical interfaces. They are both Live CDs, meaning you can just stick the disc in your computer, restart and test it without even installing. Play with both of them before installing, then pick the one you like best. Happy Linuxing! |
Google It
i think you should use google a little harder here. anyway go to
http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download the desktop version .... after you download it burn the ISO on a DVD/CD and install ... it should be stright forward... if you have any questions on post here and we will help you out :-) |
aright
thank you for the help what is linux really mircsuck stuck it to me last night and i got feed up i showed of done some checkin i glad i have 2 computers lol i would be in a hoe right now on the ubuntu witch one to download http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu//6.06/ could someone help me pick

Pick the one labeled: PC (Intel x86) desktop CD (http://mirror.cs.umn.edu/ubuntu-rele...sktop-i386.iso is the direct link) PS to all others: I'm telling him to pick the i386 regardless of whether or not he's got an x86_64 processor because it's the easier to get used to Linux before you grapple the 64-bit nuances (drivers, software, 32 bit emus, etc.) |

Phippsy, just jumping in to Linux the way you are, is gonna be difficult, what happened with Windows that frustrated you so badly? I worked with Linux and Windows for several months before finally killing my XP installation. If you go with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu 6.10, here's a very good FAQ.. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy What are the specs of your PC? IGF |
