im a newbie on win98 i want to convert.
 

I need linux. Im willing to pay for linux ant. i got a linksys wmp11 v4 pci B wireless router. I got for a pc, gateway amd athlon 650 mgz processor, and 9, and a 4 gig hdd. w/ 128 mb ram, i want to convert this pc over to Linux, i dotn know what distro, but i would love to know what distro will work with my pc?, and what do i need to install linux ant?

+ if i buy a linux pc instead of using isos and buy a whole new box, is there a way were i can get linksys to work with it??

Before you spend the big bucks on a new puter, you could try out your system with a live cd like Knoppix. That can run from the cd without making any changes to your hard drive. That way, you can get a good idea of what to expect.
If you can afford it, I would consider adding some memory to your system.

i dotn want a live cd.. lol i want the real thing, and knoppix wont get onlien either. I TRYED IT. lol. i need to resort to Linuxant, just dont know what to do, and what files i need

I would recommend Mandrake 10.0 for the brand new Linux newb like yourself. I've been relatively happy with Mandrake Linux over the years, and while it may not be quite as cool as rolling your own Gentoo distro or installing Debian on your computer using nothing more than a terminal session, Mandrake WILL work on your old computer. I have Mandrake 9.2 running on my old Pentium II 400 MHz w/ 128MB of RAM computer right now, and while it can run slowly at times using a Window manager like Gnome or KDE, it still beats the shit out of trying to run Windows 98 on this thing! I use it as a web server and file server right now, and the only times it ever crashes are when the power goes out or I decide to shut it down.

well im actually gonna get rid of windows completely and go stright linux. lol, so ill go mandrake 10, but will linux ant work, and if so how do i do it, and what do i need, can i get the direct downloads..??

Do your homework, make a list of your hardware, etc. So you know what to expect and don't get disappointed. Fool around with Knoppix a bit more just to get a real feel for linux, and once you're really ready to make the plunge, go get mandrake or something. I did the same before I put linux on my laptop. It's a good tool to see what works and what doesn't. Although in your case, it's only the network stuff, which is kinda expected I guess. Once you get it to work, run an lspci (to list your hardware) and post if you have any hardawre problems (or problems in general)

naw, linlsys just isnt cpmpatible with linux with out linux ant, i need linux ant to get on, but id otn know all the files i need, and what not.

Stop whinning about linux ant because it will not work with your setup and it is for embedded setups which your computer is not.

Mandrake 10 or any Linux distribuitons that is based on kernel version 2.6.x will work with a few wireless NIC. It comes with some software to help you setup the wireless NICs. Though I prefer you get a wired NIC and wireless bridge. Both will make it easier to setup in Linux because Linux supports almost all wired NICs and you can use a web browser to configure the wireless bridge. IMHO, setting up wireless NIC in Linux can be very, very hard for novice Linux user.

Knoppix has the ability to setup up a wireless NIC and connnect to the router. The wireless utility is buried in hundreds of programs that comes with Knoppix.

i think removing window$ partition in your computer wont be the best thing
because you need windows in using the internet because you cannot ask
for help without internet and you cannot just compile your kernel for a
driver and use it because linux is not as easy as window$! £Ä3
