ifdown on redhead8

When I tried to disconnect from ISP with " ifdown ppp0" it responds with
"ifdown [device]" message. What is the "device"?
------
I connect to my ISP with this command:
sudo /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/modem 57600 debug user itsme connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v '' ATDT7521555 CONNECT '\d\c' "

If I simply delete the pppd and reconnect with this command it would not work unless
I reboot.

Your getting an error because there isn't a configuration file for ppp0.

What do you mean by delete pppd? Are you deleteing the process via the kill command?

yes, I just use the " kill -9" command. Where should the 'configuration file" be?
