IE for Linux
Hi all
There is a version of Internet Explorer for UNIX Solaris and HP-UX, has anyone over here tweaked it and made it to work for Linux, is it possible at all, perhaps some workarounds ... |
Nobody has tweaked it because it's not open source. It will be released when Microsoft decides to port it (hopefully never)

LOL. Must not have MS crapware. If I wanted IE, I would have kept dumping money down the toilet for the next version of their OS. I wouldn't have gone Linux.

I have seen instances where people use Wine to get IE to run in a Linux environment. I have no idea how good that works though. You could try that. Just a suggestion.

Forget IE..........Opera is blinding fast on linux, mozilla rocks, galeon smokes, they are all far superior to IE.
Remember that one of the most vicious virii ever to hit windows was.........IE5. |
IE will sort of run under WINE, but it really isn't worth bothering.
I would guess about 0.1% of sites lock out non-IE users, and of those most will run quite happily with another browser that claims to be IE. Mozilla has an excellent rendering engine, and wrapping Galeon around it instead of Mozilla's (rather slow) GUI makes it very usable. The only use I have for IE is testing webpages (and then getting upset that it can't cope with my CSS when Konqueror, Mozilla, and Opera can) |

What a thread Thymox. I think the more you get into Windows, the more set in your ways you get. You think you're a "techie" then all of a sudden you find out that you don't know poop... Same thing happened to me. I was like "where are the file extensions?! where are the nice setup.exe files?!" I wasn't missing IE though :D |

Thanx a lot for UR suggestions & views, over here I have a different situation and reason for asking this question, I have an Intranet running NT4 with IIS an application with COM objects..etc, Now none of this stuff will work with Netscape or Konqueror or Opera, I want my users to appreciate Linux and use it, for the last 6 months I am using Linux fairly good as a Desktop OS, My users are very much stuck up with M$ OS, what I want to give them is a scenario like what U can do with windows can be done with Linux, but only that it is a little faster and a lot more robust... Now many use the Intranet and the respective apps there which are not compatible or just wont make sense for Linux based browsers & yes I am on my way to migrate that stuff tp PHP with Apache, but in the mean time I am slowly trying to convince users to use Linux with Openoffice for their admin work etc.. These apps in the Intranet server are important and we need to use it daily for our work I was reading a article on www.techrepublic.com and in one of the Discussion for All windows apps work fine on Linux using Codeweavers WINE, one member said that this version of IE for Solaris can be tweaked to work on Linux, He is yet to reply how he did it So If can get IE to work in Linux, I achieve a situation that all is fine with using LINUX cos a lot of users now are putting up an objection that this can't be done in Linux ...blah blah, I am convincing them to a good extent and things are improving quite well. Its going to take a while until I migrate all the apps to PHP but in the mean time I want an interium solution for users to use IE on LINUX Perhaps I have to give up hopes or wait for a reply from that member in techrepublic discussion forum |
No, you should be able to get it to work under Wine. It will probably involve tweaking a load of files to really fool IE into thinking it's on a Windows machine, but it has been done before, so it can be done again.
There are alternatives, for the interim. You could look at things like VMWare (I know it's a cracking a walnut with a sledge hammer, but it'd work). Anyho, not to be daft, because I'm not really all that good on my intranet stuff, but why can't these things be run from Nutscrape? (note: genuine question, no intention to incite a riot) |
