icon file bearing side red circle containing a white X ???
 

Greetings.

i would appreciate if somebody could elucidate me on the meaning of this surprising item:

once i realized that IrfanView, a win32 very usefull image manager,
without much preliminar configurations by Wine runs in my installed Linux distros (ZORIN OS and UberStudent 1.1), copy-pasted its basic
folder into my desktop and then procceded to generate a link to
avoid having to open the folder in order to run the said
application once i can not find a Linux image application that solves
the same desiderata as IrfanView easily does. And, much to my surprise it WORKED!!! And continues to work...
But, suddenly the link icon built by Linux itself changed to dark grey, displaying in the upper right corner a bright red circle containníng a white X.(Means "unreadable"?? -- but
it was produced by the system! And anyway IT READS AND WORKS under my clicking cmd -- how much
more obnoxious can such a scene devellop into?!

The same 'nice magic' happened to the icon files of some .mp3 and .mp4 files that i keep in the folders Music and Pictures and which are readable: either playing music or displaying videoclips...). Good grief! And this happens in both Linux distros i'm using!

My questions therefore are:

1. What happened there?
2. What does this irrational scene mean?
3. What is the actual purpose that the "emblems mumbo-jumbo" serves?
4. How can i dispense with these erratic flaggy ugly signs in my monitor?

Hardly. A much more likely explanation is that you just haven't communicated the problem clearly enough for anybody to answer you. I've read through your description several times now and I still can't even quite picture what you're talking about.

In addition, since it appears to have something to do with a windows/wine program, it's likely that very few, if any, people here have experienced anything like it personally.

If you could supply a screenshot or two of the icon(s) and their surroundings, perhaps it would increase your chances of someone recognizing it.

Now, i understand! What we have here is a perfect example of a miscommunication issue.
A GURU of LQ, in spite of having peered over my 'confusing erratic text' times fold 3, did not understood my therefore lame questions and, thus the said Guru, in a deep ZEN display of his wisdom invites me to show my premises lest no one would be prepared to help me.
I'm consequently not only a self deemed newbee, but also a misled individual who is not even able to clearly explain his own problems. And even dares to reiterate his own help soliciting!!!

Thankz but no thanks. I can see LQ -- in spite of meanwhile enhanced denying declarations -- continues its path of allowing Guru's harsh treatment to daringly non-humble-behaving newbees.

Now that was uncalled for. I said nothing about your question being "lame", only that in my opinion you didn't communicate it well enough. I merely suggested that you provide more information and clarify what you wrote a bit.

It appears to me that it's the newbie with a chip on his shoulder who has preemptively rejected our help (and metaphorically stormed out of the room) due to some imagined slight on our part, rather than considering the possibility of there being other reasons for the lack of a prompt and helpful reply*. Indeed, going by the tone of the second post, this seems to have been an issue from even before I chimed in.
