Icon Editor for Ubuntu

Hi, All,

Does anybody know which icon editor is the best for Linux?
Wannted features:
- transparent background
- allowing text input
- a range of sizes from 16 up to 64 or 256 px
- allowing to use photo for creating icons (not mandatory)

Asking all the people who've worked in this area,
tried to google, but get a lot of answers mostly for Windows, not for Linux...

Many thanks for reply.

Probably GIMP...icons are just small pictures.

No,
I look at a gimp, this is not the case.
Program for creating icons usually shows the picture in two areas, one is real image, the second is zoomed icon with small squares (pixels) in a grid...

I am seeking tools especially for icons...
Thanks,
Radmir

It seems the most convenient way is to paint *.png 512x512 px picture, e.g. in gimp, then jump to Windows, launch icofx-2.5.exe and convert painting to desired icon.
But there is another problem - gimp 2.8.6 doesn't work with genius wizardpen(UC-logic tablet WP5540U)! Mypaint works, but gimp does not. OS- ubuntu 13.10.
Where is a fault?
Who can guess?

KDE has an icon editor and so does Gnome.

Here's an article on using the GIMP to edit icons.

Gimp should definitely support input tablets.

Does it show up at all under input devices?

Hi, frankbell,

->KDE has an icon editor and so does Gnome.
had a look to kiconedit, I think, icofx 2.5 is more better, but it hasn't linux version.

link to Gnome (http://sourceforge.net/projects/iconedit/) refers to Gnome Icon Edit Web Site (http://iconedit.sourceforge.net/) which refers to
Download Gnome Icon Edit files (http://sourceforge.net/projects/iconedit/files). The last shows page with sentence
"This project has no files."

->Here's an article on using the GIMP to edit icons.

This article is very usefull, thanks a lot.

Gimp works perfect with other input devices and UC-logic tablet WP5540U is in list of input devices. It goes mad if I check it.
MyPaint works normal...
