Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have worked for a couple of days on my linux box. Im running Debian Sarge with a self compiled kernel 2.6.4.
The computer is an old IBM thinkpad 770x. All the hardware works, and have had it all working, but never at once.. :-) .
Well here it goes.
It all started with a standard debian woodie, upgraded to sarge. I used Gnome 2.4, but i found it to slow for this 300Mhz pentium II, so i decided to install fluxbox. Working with that for a week or two, poking around config files, ended throwing it away, never ending..
All of a suddun i didn't have space, so I decided to unistall not used files, so i uninstalled KDE, Gnome, GDM and a lot of other things. Installed ICEWM, just to see that it for me was completely impossible to set a background image. Now it runs with that gray/black background.
Is it possible to uninstall it all and start over, without having to recompile the kernel. So that when I start, it just stops in the console, and from there I can begin apt-get install xxx what ever i want? or should i just keep trouble shooting those annoing problems I have..
If thats the case, can someone explain to me how to fix the following:
1. From my XFree86.0.log. This is an error i couldn't solve.
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a
Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:m_debug_clip.o": No symbols found
Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:m_debug_norm.o": No symbols found

Skipping "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:m_debug_vertex.o": No symbols found
(II) Module GLcore: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 220.127.116.11, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Server Extension, version 0.2
2. When ever I run alsaconf to configure my sound it runs, finds my hardware, and everything is fine. All the sound is working.. BUT, when I restart it forgets what it just did, and if i then run ESD, it causes kernel panic..
3. How do i set the background image in ICEWM, i have entered the path to a jpg image, but nothing happens. I cant even use a staight color.. nothing works.
4. XFree86.0.log another error:
