iBook login screen resolution: want 800x600 by default

I recently loaded Debian 7 (Wheezy, LXDE, lightdm) on my old (2002) iBook. It's a PowerPC g3, with 466 MHz, 128 MB Ram and 10 GB hard drive. The OS is now running nicely, but I have a problem with the login screen resolution.

By default, the login screen itself is coming in at 1024x768, making the screen split horizontally with the login GUI being just off-screen. I've logged in as user and root and adjusted their screen resolutions to 800x600 and all's well with them as users. However, I'd like to change the login screen resolution to default to 800x600 as well so it's more easily usable.

I've created and edited numerous xorg.conf files, and all of them result in blank screens or hanging during boot. I've consulted this forum, debian forums and even wiki.x.org, but no one seems to have an answer for this.

Any thoughts, anyone?

A reasonable suggestion as a workaround. I'd still like to get the GUI login to work though.
