a 6 year old mac is using ? what a old IBM - PPC cpu ?

that right there will limit you as to what can be used

it has to be a SPECIAL PPC build

now it is is one of the INTEL x86 CPU's then there is no real obstacle
the only issue will be RAM

most os's now need 4 gig of ram

but some can be made to work with only 512 meg

so

Can you post the old mac's hardware specs

Is this you?

If so.

This way you can run in VM first in a Mac using parallels (before you decide to install).

You can probably use any Linux you wish instead of Ubuntu in that video.
I don't own a mac so I am only poking and hoping and guessing here.

Some other reading needed by you

Read all links in orange on that page from bugs

Update: This critical bug was fixed. (A while ago, actually. No version of Ubuntu after 11.04 was affected; the UEFIBooting page has been updated to reflect this.) Related: This question about whether or not this bug is still an issue. We probably should dupe one to the other. On the other hand, this question, and this answer, are a bit broader, pertaining to compatibility also

it's running currently on Mountain Lion 10.5.8 (i think, the information isn't on the install disks that I can read) - it has 2gb RAM and 100gb storage.

i would keep it no problem but i can't get version of programmes that will use this operating system; utorrent for example, or Traktor, and the browser doesn't even support my gmail.
